Recently: August 2017

August disappeared faster than a bag of potato chips in my pantry. But how can I complain? We are coming up on my favorite months, and the heat is slipping into a distant memory. I wish I could say that September is going to be slow and calm and that I will use that time to catch up on my reading. By reading, I of course mean Netflix. However, September is proving to be more packed than August, but in a very good way.

I get to attend Feast Portland 2017 as a blogger and bring you all the fun things that go with it! This means I’ll be Instagramming live at the events. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to be eating awesome food and taking pictures of the gorgeous scenery. For those of you who are wondering JUST what is this girl talking about… Feast is a huge foodie event that happens in Portland every year. Forty plus vendors will be there hosting specific events all around the downtown area. Feast is presented by Bon Appetit and Ahem Tillamook will be there. Yep, that’s where I will be. Tillamook is sponsoring an event called Smoked! and it will be filled with amazing food. Smoked meats and yes, I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

Be sure to follow along on my Instagram account for my stories and fun pictures September 14-17th!

Check out the Feast Schedule if you want tickets, but fast! They are almost gone. And if you can’t think of a good enough reason to go, besides — artisan teas, breakfast bites, and refreshing bevies, the proceeds will go to Hunger Free Oregon. So we can feed as we feast.

Recently, I’ve been…

Making cakes! It’s wedding season! Plus, any time of the year is birthday, shower, and anniversary season! I’ve been knee deep in Costco-sized bags of flour, and I smelled slightly of buttermilk. Which was a really great musk compared to smelling of stress sweat that I proudly boasted all of July. August baking was fantastic.

Recently, I’ve been loving…

Planning for all things FALL. I know I am obsessive about the seasons. I’m that person in the conversation that always brings it back to the weather. Not because I have nothing to talk about but because I love it. I wish so very much that I could go back to the elementary school days, where it was the early to mid 90’s, so I can wear my Mary Janes and brown bag my mom’s chocolate chip cookies for a recess snack. As it is, I still go back-to-school shopping so I can get some fresh crayons and markers for my stress coloring sessions. Yes, I color when I am stressed. Like, in a children’s coloring book type of coloring. Try it out some time. You’ll thank me.

Recently, I’ve been wanting…

Um, can we talk about the fact that Rifle Paper Co. teamed with Keds!?!? Two of my favorite brands and yeah, I want them all. But, like how do you choose? HOW DO YOU CHOOSE!?!?!

Recently, I’ve been asked…

“How do you do it?” Hmmm…. This is a big question. I think what they (I’ve gotten this question like 5 times this last month) mean is “How do you run a blog, take professional pictures, make custom cake orders, work almost full time, attend events, make time for family, and stay alive?” Yes, I have a lot of things to juggle. A whole lot of things to juggle. But the key to my circus-act-of-a-life rests in a few things:

  1. I don’t have kids. That’s a big one.
  2. I have a mind that never tires. Literally, I think my ADD has helped me be able to juggle so many things. My mind is running, running, and running wild 24/7. I love that it once was a pain in my side, and now I see so many benefits from it, *cough,* when it’s under control that is.
  3. THE ONE THING. I read this book and it so struck a chord with me. I focus on One Thing at a time. I say no to things that aren’t in that focus, and I make fixed time for my One Thing.
  4. I make time to clean my house. If I have a clean house then I am more useful throughout the day. It makes me happy, which makes me creative, which makes me productive.
  5. I make a choice, every day, to do something my future self will thank me for.
  6. I work from about 6 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. Monday through Sunday. I’d work longer if I could, but I choose to put the computer, spatula, or camera down at 8:30 p.m.
  7. I sleep 7-8 hours every night. That is so important for me to give 100% of myself to my day job, my night job, and my relationships.
  8. I sacrifice.
  9. I say no.
  10. I drink strong black coffee.

Recently, my Type One has been…

Where to begin? Midnight juice boxes and 11 nights in a row of interrupted slumbers have cause me to wear a bit of a snarl on my face post noon. Yes, for real, I had 11 nights in a row of low blood sugar. To those of you wondering, it means that I had too much insulin and my blood sugar is dangerously low. However, my doctor and I lowered some dosages and I’m now on day 8 of sleeping like Leonardo Dicaprio Inception style. However, I’m still recovering from a week of eating a fourth meal, and my problem area is like Violet Beauregarde’s after she ate that blueberry.

I saved the best for last. My A1C was an astonishing 5.5! My A1C is a test that measures the average number of my BG over the past 3-4 months. So all you people who have the ability to produce insulin on your own, your A1C can be anywhere between 4.8-6. So a 5.5 is a PRETTY stellar number. Daniel brought me some doughnuts and a Starbucks chai to celebrate that day.

Recently, I’ve been eating…

Oh-ma-gawsh — Strawberries and fresh mozzarella with balsamic reduction as a little snack mid afternoon. It’s fantastic, and I just can not get enough! The way all those flavors come together?!?! STTOPPP, so good.

Okay, I’m out! It’s been lovely catching up with you all and I just cannot find a way to say “Sayonara, August.” Let me know if you have any special fall recipe requests! Please comment if you aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to summer recipes yet. Or just drop a comment to say “hi”. That is pretty great too!

  1. Hey there! The cakes are gorgeous, your pictures are gorgeous, and you should be PROUD of that A1C!!! (My teenage son’s was 9(!!!!) at his last visit-and we try HARD) have a lovely weekend!

    1. Thank you, Susannah!!! I am very proud of it! I know that I’ll have not-so good A1C’s and great A1C’s so I’m definitely taking the time to celebrate it! Isn’t that the frustrating thing about T1D? That you can work so hard and still miss the mark? Frustrating! Hope your weekend is great too! Hang in there 🙂

  2. Karlee, I recently listened to you on The Crumb talking about baking Pound Cakes ! It was a delight to listen to and you’re laugh is infectious. You mentioned a recipe, of yours, for baked buttermilk doughnuts! My very favorite. Is it possible for me to have it? I would love to make them for my family. Thank you so much, I am a reader of your blog.
