Not that I stopped wearing hoodies this summer, but now they’re finally acceptable. Acceptable and comfortable. It’s the hiding season. When I get to bunch up into knitted cloths and tall, loose socks while I make my way through the cooler months with a little more ease. Coffee hold the ice cubes.
We’ve cleaned out our ducts and serviced the woodburning fireplace (which looks like it needs major repairs before use). I’m planting my bulbs this weekend all snug into the earth so that they can take a deep breath and forget about outward growth for a few seasons. The house is getting ready to bunker.
I’m planning to do the same. I don’t want to have to labor around growth for a while. I need to nest and be covered and when it’s Spring I’ll grow, but this time with a little more intention. I think it’s the first time in a long time that I don’t know what I want out of the next 5 years of my life. Only vague outlines of hope and the worry that I might have to let some things go. What I’m not sure of yet.
But I’m done running from it. I’m ready to face it head on, buried deep into blankets, with mason jars of fruit and egg noodle soup.
I hope that whatever you’re running from you can stop and examine. It’s hard but I think it will be rewarding too. I hope that your time is spent with your family, on your couch, on a slow walk – or making No Bake Peanut Butter Bars.
Now that we’re here, I think adding some peanut M&M’s might be fun too. But the most important thing is that you make them and enjoy them. Don’t monitor your bites or calories. It’s not the time of year for that. It’s the time to just hang out in the kitchen, press batter into a prepared pan, but the most important part is that you make them on your own while you contemplate your next move.
