Daniel and I love our Christmas traditions. No, I’m not talking about the one where we get a tree that is far too large for our living room. No, I’m not talking about the one where we end up wrapping the presents on the night of the 23rd. Although, I have to say these traditions seem to make appearances in our house far too often.
Our first married Christmas together we didn’t have a momma dollar and papa dollar to lock in a safe together. But we owned one Christmas movie and a few Christmas decorations collected from January clearance sales past. It was enough. So that year we spent a day decorating a small apartment and spent that night drinking egg nog and watching our one movie, Christmas Vacation.
Now, every year, Daniel spends the day putting up Christmas lights and I spend it putting away fall and bringing in Christmas. It takes exponentially longer now than it did that one year but we still end it drinking egg nog (in moose mugs of course) while watching one of the best movies from our ever growing Christmas movie collection, Christmas vacation.
Making egg nog from scratch isn’t hard at all. Especially with this simplified version. It’s basically a really awesome base for ice cream. Plus this recipe is so simple it lends itself to whatever you might want to add to it! You can add cinnamon or white chocolate. Make your own egg not latte. I bet you could make a really awesome Chai version. However you choose to make it, make sure that you do it while watching a Christmas movie or enjoy it with family. That’s what Christmas is all about. That and the birth of our Lord.
PrintClassic Cooked Egg Nog
You’ll wonder why you never made egg nog from scratch! This holiday classic will blow you away once you try it out on your own!
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Cook Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 6–8 servings 1x
Ingredients
7 egg yolks (9 for thickest)
1 cup sugar
5 cups whole milk
A teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoon nutmeg
A cinnamon stick
Instructions
In a medium sauce pan add sugar and yolks. Whisk together over medium to high heat until the sugar dissolves. Whisk in milk then add the vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon stick. Cook over medium heat stirring often until the mixture thickens, about ten minutes. Remove the cinnamon stick, cover and put in the fridge. The nog will thicken up as it cools. Once it has cooled completely, pulse just a few times with a submersion blender or regular blender to smooth.
