Please welcome my friend, Cambria. Our first guest contributor. I’m so glad you get to meet her and love her as I have for some 30 years now.
Have we all been Christmasing since Thanksgiving? I know the Flores family got the jump on everyone. They barely packed up their Halloween ghosts before St. Nick sat winking on their kitchen counter. Orange, falling leaves backlighting their 90’s Christmas tree. That’s how they do.
We’ve been celebrating ourselves a little earlier than normal this year. The Olsons, that is. I should introduce myself, Cambria Olson here. Karlee and I grew up together. She reminds me of all my old memories.
Anyway, the Olsons usually hold out until we get through a few birthdays and a Thanksgiving and then a week or two to digest. Then we can start listening to Burl Ives croon about “Silver and Gold.” That’s usually the way. However, this year we let Christmas sneak in right on November’s heels.
And gifting. Best intentions, we always intend to start early, but we have no end game. It’s just a bustle bustle until finally we’re sitting around a tree, blurry-eyed and cursing the frenzy of the season.
Best avoided.
This year, in the interest of enjoying all things early, you’ve got plenty of time yet to crank out a heartfelt, lovingly-handmade gift. Glad tidings. The project for you? Crocheted scrunchies, of course.
If you know crochet, this’ll be a breeze. Make a bundle. If crochet is new to you, it’s a great little project to learn the craft’s essential stitches. You’ll go far with a chain stitch, single and double crochet stitches. Follow the links for a better teacher than me.
My scrunchie is excruciatingly Christmasy, since I used scraps of leftover yarn from the stockings I’ve been knitting since September. And tinsel. My grandma drapes her tree in miles of tinsel. It gets everywhere and just sparkles. I love it. I sewed a few strands of tinsel into the edges with a tapestry needle. Pretty proud of this shiny addition. Still, the tinsel has zero stretch, so it will absolutely snap a little with each use. You’ll probably leave golden bits in your wake. I hope you do.
Scrunchies gifted to you the maker or scrunchies for the stockings. They’re easy, so quick, so satisfying. Put your hair up and unpack those baubles. Take extra care.
Christmas Crochet Scrunchie
Have a go at crochet with these Christmas Scrunchies. They are easy, quick, so satisfying and plump up a droopy Christmas stocking nicely.
- Yield: 1 scrunchie
Ingredients
Hair tie (preferably one that matches your yarn-ish)
Nice, bulky yarn: I used Lamb’s Pride Bulky in Oatmeal and White Frost
Crochet hook to match your yarn: I used US J10, 6.00 MM
Instructions
Holding a hair tie and the yarn with your left hand, draw up a loop through the middle of the hair tie. It’s fiddly. Just get the yarn on your hook your way.
Row 1: ch 1, 23 sc, sl st in first sc
Row 2: ch 3, [1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] all in the same stitch, *sk 2 sc, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]* all in the same stitch. Repeat from * to * until final 2 sc in round. Sk 2 sc. Sl st in top of first ch 3. Break off yarn. Weave in the ends. Enjoy.
